Discussion

  • What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?

  • At the beginning of this week’s passage what is the crowd looking for? What does Jesus tell them to look for instead?

  • In verse 35 we find Jesus declaring the first “I AM” statement of John’s gospel. What is the significance of this claim?

  • Once again in this gospel we encounter people who have misplaced hope. Have you encountered people in your life who have misplaced hope? What do they seem to be looking for and what might be their motivation? Would you categorize their pursuits and goals as temporary or eternal?

  • This passage contains difficult teaching that causes many to turn back and no longer follow Jesus. What are some other difficult teachings of Jesus? Have you witnessed anyone turning back and no longer following Jesus because of a difficult teaching?

  • Take time to examine your own heart and life. Where have you placed your hope? Are you living a life that reflects the correction that Jesus offers the crowd in verse 27? Would you categorize your pursuits and goals as temporary or eternal?

  • How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life? Will you respond as Peter does in verse 68?
