TEACHING RECAP

Summary: As we read the Scripture, especially in the Psalms, we see in "ancient times" the people of God (Israel) had patterns of thankfulness that were a regular part of the assembly and everyday life. These patterns aided the congregation to focus their minds on God, specifically bringing to mind attributes and actions of God. When spoken to one another, they created a landscape where all could draw from to respond to God in appropriate gratitude.

Main Points:

  • 1. Thank God because He is God

  • 2. Thank God for His miraculous work in creating all we see and experience

  • 3. Thank God for His mighty work in rescuing and redeeming us

  • 4. Thank God for His loving kindness and disposition to us

On-Ramps:

  • 1. Get into a rhythm of reading the Scriptures. See all that God has been doing and what He plans to do.

  • 2. Start a rhythm of daily reflection with Jesus, looking for how He has been at work in your life. Start a Gratitude Journal.

  • 3. Begin to cultivate a rhythm of asking people how Jesus is moving in their lives and why they are thankful.

Discussion

  • What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?

  • What attributes of God’s character do you see emphasized in Psalm 136? Where else in scripture do you see these attributes emphasized?

  • Does the society we live in practice a pattern of thankfulness? Where do you see evidence of this?

  • Do you find it natural or uncomfortable to express gratitude in the communities you are a part of? How would an increase in your comfortability with outward expressions of thankfulness change your circles of influence?

  • If you were to make an intentional effort to grow more comfortable with expressing gratitude to God both privately and publicly, how might that change your perspective on life?

  • How has Jesus been at work in your life recently? What are you thankful to Him for today?

  • How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life?

PRAYER

  • How can we pray for you as a group?

  • Next week: Exodus 20:8-11; Matthew 11:28-30; Hebrews 10:23-25
