TEACHING RECAP

Summary: The Gospel of John has held a special place in the heart of the church for thousands of years, drawing millions into a relationship with Jesus and deepening their faith. While its mission is clearly outlined in chapter 20, the richness of the book can’t be fully appreciated by reading it quickly. It’s crafted to slowly reveal its meaning as one listens, reads, thinks deeply, and discusses it with others over time.

Main Points:

  1. The Gospel of John is one of four Biblical accounts of Jesus’ life which have been distributed together since the early years of the church, and it is notably different from the other three.

  2. Traditionally, the Apostle John has been considered to be the author of the Gospel of John, the Epistles (letters) of John and the Book of Revelation.

  3. John presents many important themes that progress throughout the book, and eventually states his purpose clearly in John 20:31.

  4. John’s Gospel is organized carefully, intentionally and thematically into four sections, but also has some mysterious features.

On-Ramps:

  • Connect with John in a variety of ways, both alone and with others.

  • Pay attention to Old Testament “hyperlinks” by studying cross-references.

  • Aim for deep reflection, not quick instruction.

  • Apprentice with Jesus in your daily life by trying what you learn.

Discussion

  • What stands out to you from this passage? How does this passage most challenge or encourage you?

  • According to today’s passage, what is the purpose of the recorded Gospel of Jesus?

  • The same John who wrote this Gospel also wrote the New Testament letters of 1, 2, & 3 John. Read 1 John 1:1-4. Through what physical ways does John indicate his belief in Jesus came? What does John say these physical experiences of interacting with Jesus now allow him to do?

  • There is a level of spiritual mystery present in Christianity, and definitely in John’s gospel. How do you see this mystery as beneficial to your faith? Have you experienced others responding well to this mystery when you’ve shared it with them, or have you encountered opposition?

  • How has the Gospel of John (or any of the 4 gospels) moved you toward faith in Jesus?

  • Have you ever read the Gospel of John in it’s entirety? Consider taking on the challenge to do so this week, on your own or as a group.

  • Today’s message reminds us that often hearing the truth of Jesus comes before we experience it. Where do you believe you have heard Jesus’ voice, calling you to a new understanding or experience of him?

  • How do you want to respond to this passage in your daily life?

PRAYER

  • How can we pray for you as a group?

  • Next week: John 9:1-41
